Why Your Old Dog Is Suddenly Scared of Your Floors — And the Simple Fix That Gives Them Their Confidence Back
"Sometimes it isn't age slowing them down. It's the floor."

If your dog has started hesitating in doorways, this is for you.
THE SHORT VERSION
As dogs age, their paws lose grip, and hard floors turn every step into a gamble. After a few bad slips, many dogs quietly stop trying: no more following you to the kitchen, no more meeting you at the door. Sure Step™ Traction Pads put grip right under the paw, so they can move around their own home with confidence again. Below: why it happens, why this works, and a 5-minute home check every senior dog owner should do.
You Remember What They Used to Be Like
The dog who heard your keys from two rooms away. Who skidded round the corner to meet you at the door. Who followed you from room to room like it was their job.
And lately… something's changed.
Maybe it's the way their back legs slide out when they try to stand up. The way they stop at the edge of the kitchen tiles and just look at you. The way they don't come upstairs anymore, and you've half-convinced yourself that's just what happens when a dog gets old.
Here's the part nobody tells you: a lot of that change isn't about how much your dog can do. It's about how much they trust the floor.
Every slip teaches them something. After enough of them, the safest choice is to stay put. So they do. And a dog who stays put slowly stops being part of the everyday life of the house.
The good news? That's one of the few parts of getting older you can actually do something about, and it takes about as long as a cup of tea.
"Ollie & Grey is named for the dogs we all know: the Ollie who's been by your side for years, and the grey that slowly creeps into his muzzle. Watching an old dog stop at the edge of a shiny floor is one of those quiet heartbreaks, and it turned out to be one of the easiest to fix. So we set out to fix it properly."

Why Older Dogs Start Slipping

Dogs were built to grip earth and grass, not polished timber. When they're young, strong legs cover for it. As they get older, a few things change at once:
1. Their paw pads change. Pads can become drier and smoother with age, so there's less natural grip where the paw meets the floor.
2. Fur grows over the pads. Long fur between the toes sits on top of the pad and acts like a slide.
3. Back-leg strength fades. A little slip a young dog would catch without thinking becomes a full splay.
4. Our homes got slipperier. Tile, laminate, vinyl and polished boards look great, but give a paw almost nothing to hold.
Put those together and every trip to the water bowl becomes a small risk. Your dog knows it, even if you haven't put a name to it yet.
What Most Owners Try First (And Why It Rarely Sticks)
If you've already tried to fix this, you're in good company. The usual attempts:
Rugs and runners everywhere. They help… until your dog steps off the edge. And your home slowly starts to look like an obstacle course.
Yoga mats and foam tiles. They slide, they curl, and they only cover the spots you thought of.
Carrying them, or keeping them in one room. It keeps them safe. It also keeps them out of family life, which is the very thing you're trying to protect.
The problem with all of these is the same: the grip is on the floor, not on the dog. So we moved it to where it actually matters.
WHY IT WORKS
8 Reasons Sure Step™ Works When Rugs and Mats Don't

1. They can get up to greet you again
Sure Step™ pads sit right under the paw, exactly where your dog pushes off to stand. That's the moment most slips happen. Steadier starts mean more of the small things you've missed: the wag at the door, the trot to the kitchen, following you down the hall.

2. The grip goes wherever they go
Rugs protect one spot. Pads protect every step: kitchen, hallway, bathroom, the tiles by the back door. No more planning your home around where the mats are.

3. Thin enough to feel natural
Each pad is ultra-thin and flexible, designed to move with the paw rather than feel like a shoe. No straps, no boots, nothing to chew off.

4. Your home stops looking like an obstacle course
Roll the yoga mats back up. Put the spare rugs away. Your floors can be your floors again, and your dog can use all of them.

5. Made to stay on
The biggest complaint about cheap paw pads is that they fall off. Ours use a skin-safe, medical-grade adhesive chosen after testing 3 suppliers, and typically last 5–7 days of normal indoor use.

6. On in about a minute - a paw
Peel, press, done. No tools, no vet visit, no wrestling. Every order comes with a short video walkthrough so the first application is the easy one.

7. Sized by weight, so there's no tape measure
You already know what your dog weighs. Choose Small (under 12 kg / 25 lb), Medium (12–27 kg / 25–60 lb) or Large (over 27 kg / 60 lb). Wrong size? Unopened packs exchange free.

FROM THE SENIOR DOG COMFORT GUIDE
The 5-Minute Home Check Every Senior Dog Owner Should Do
Pads are one piece of the puzzle. These small changes make a big difference, whether or not you ever buy from us.

1. Trim the fur between the pads.
Long fur covers the pad and acts like a slide. A monthly tidy with round-tip scissors helps immediately.
2. Keep nails short.
Long nails tip the paw back so less of the pad touches the floor. If you can hear them clicking, they're probably due.
3. Map their daily routes.
Bed → water → back door → your favourite chair. Those paths matter more than the room as a whole.
4. Light the night route.
A plug-in night light on the way to water and the door helps older eyes and cautious feet.
5. Block the stairs they shouldn't tackle alone.
A simple gate prevents the unsupervised attempt while you're out.
6. Watch for the quiet signs.
Hesitating before turns, standing with legs wide, sitting down to eat, avoiding certain rooms. Note them and mention them at your next vet visit; your vet is the right person for anything to do with pain or joints.
The full Senior Dog Comfort Guide covers home setup, a gentle daily mobility routine, sleep and bedding, adapting walks, winter care and the questions worth asking your vet. It's free with every Comfort Kit.

What Owners Are Saying
★★★★★
"Purchased for my 8-year-old dachshund who was diagnosed with IVDD earlier this year. Managing his environment to prevent re-injury is critical, and slipping on floors is exactly the kind of movement that can cause damage. These pads are now non-negotiable in our household. They stay on reliably, apply without any fuss, and he tolerates them completely. The peace of mind they provide - knowing he can move around without risk of slipping - is worth so much more than the price. Our specialist vet has seen them and approves. For any dachshund owner managing IVDD, these are essential."

"My 11-year-old golden retriever, Biscuit, has been struggling badly on our hardwood floors for the past year. He'd slip and slide every time he tried to get up from his bed, and I could see it was really affecting his confidence — he stopped wanting to come into the lounge. After trying rugs everywhere (a trip hazard for us), booties he absolutely refused to wear, and even socks, I finally tried Sure Step Traction Pads. Honestly, the transformation was immediate. Within minutes of application he was walking normally around the kitchen. Three weeks in and the pads are still holding well. Application was much easier than I expected — maybe 5 minutes for all four paws. Will be a permanent part of our routine now."

★★★★★
"My vet recommended these after my 10-year-old Labrador Stella started showing signs of hip dysplasia. The slipping was making everything worse for her — you could see the stress it caused her body every time she tried to navigate the kitchen. Two months in with these pads and the difference is remarkable. She moves more fluidly, she's sleeping better (less pain from bracing herself), and she's back to wanting her evening walks around the block. I size up from what the guide suggests for her because she's quite broad-pawed and that works perfectly. Genuinely life-improving for a senior dog dealing with mobility issues."

Common Questions
Will it hurt my dog or pull their fur when it comes off?
Pads are designed to peel away cleanly. Apply to clean, dry pads and trim long fur first. The application video shows exactly how.
How long does each application last?
Typically 1-3 days of normal indoor use, depending on activity and how often paws get wet. Every kit contains multiple full applications, so you always have the next set ready.
Which size do I need?
Choose by weight: Small under 12 kg / 25 lb, Medium 12–27 kg / 25–60 lb, Large over 27 kg / 60 lb. Between sizes? Pick the smaller one. Unopened packs exchange free.
My dog won't tolerate anything stuck to their paws. What then?
Some dogs simply prefer socks. Our Sure Grip Socks have a non-slip sole and are a gentle alternative.
Is this a treatment for arthritis or joint pain?
No. Sure Step™ pads add traction on slippery floors; they don't treat any medical condition. If your dog seems to be in pain or is slowing down quickly, please talk to your vet.
